5.10 - Student Attire
SERIES 5 - STUDENTS
An established standard of student attire is necessary for the maintenance of an environment of academic excellence. To minimize distractions and social distinctions, Liberty Common School’s school-wide standards and guidance for student attire reinforces our character-education efforts including our Foundation Stones, Capstone Virtues, and Thinking Framework. Furthermore, a specific goal of the LCHS dress code is to help students to transition into the world with the understanding that values and virtue stand above materialism, fads, and fashion.
Proper norms of student attire positively impact how students treat one another, how well they project respect for professional classroom instructors, their general comportment, and how well they maintain a focus on academic goals. Proper norms of student attire promote general academic success.
The LCS administration shall establish and maintain standards and guidelines for student attire including enforcement protocols conducive to achieving the school’s academic, moral, and behavioral objectives. The administration will communicate standards and guidelines for student attire through the Student-Parent Handbook, a current edition of which is posted and available on the school’s website. Standards and guidelines for student attire may be amended as appropriate. Such amendments, when necessary, shall occur no more than once per year. Any amendment shall be communicated to the school community prior to the beginning of the school’s fiscal year on the First of July. This schedule honors parents who bear the primary responsibility of providing suitable attire for their children that aligns with school policy.
The Board recognizes the complexities of establishing, maintaining, and enforcing a standard of student attire and that individual preferences are subordinate to that standard. Parents and students are encouraged to acknowledge the same. The joy of learning in community with one another requires cooperation within a common framework.
