Liberty Students...
Elizabeth Timpe, Board of Directors
"Liberty Common School students are amazing!"
Recently, Headmaster Schaffer challenged staff members to begin each article/statement with "Liberty students..." The goal? To emphasize everything the school does is for and because of students. This challenge highlights the dedication and care Liberty staff consistently demonstrate in everything it does.
The efforts of Liberty’s staff and parents have created a thriving school community, exemplified by exceptional student performance on standardized tests. These results are achieved through a well-balanced curriculum that doesn’t simply "teach to the test." Our expanding school continues to showcase a high-quality education proving these amazing students are up for the challenge.
As Liberty grows, the Board of Directors assures the school community that Liberty students are well-supported. Last month, LCS hosted all sixth graders for Spartan Week at Camp Timberline bringing together students from both elementary campuses for the first time. As a Board member, it was beautiful to learn of the cohesion and friendships formed between these students. This event was valuable preparation for next year when they will all come together in the new junior-high campus.
As you have been made aware, Kathleen Kearney has been hired as the junior-high principal with full support from the BOD. Mrs. Kearney is ready to lead these students and guide a fourth thriving campus. If Spartan Week is any indication, it is going to go very well.
Liberty Common students do not exist in a vacuum. Since its inception, Liberty Common has never adopted an “isolationist” policy. The school leadership has consistently worked to be part of the greater community. It never ceases to amaze me the political connections and community-based events Liberty maintains to help the school survive the increasingly hostile political climate. One such event is the Student-Led Candidate Forum bringing together local politicians to learn more about their stance on a variety of issues. If you missed it the event, you can watch the replay here.
When Liberty identifies a need in the community, it acts. At our most recent Board meeting, we renewed our partnership with the Charter Advocacy Coalition (CAC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to defending and advancing charter-school autonomy and parental rights in Colorado. The CAC, founded by Liberty’s own Sarah Hunt, works to protect Liberty and other charter schools from anti-charter legislation. Its mission is to increase access to exceptional public education by advocating for the opening, expansion, and success of charter schools. This is achieved through direct lobbying at the State Capitol and the State Board of Education.
Liberty Common students would not exist without the parents. When I was on staff at LCHS over 10 years ago in a weekly staff memo Mr. Schaffer mentioned this quote from Andy Stanley that has stuck with me since, “Your greatest contribution to the world may not be something you do, but someone you raise."
The Board would like to express its gratitude to all parents for trusting it with your most valuable contribution. Thank you for the countless volunteer hours you dedicate—whether it’s in literacy centers, as guest readers, during festivals, or at Grandparents Day—the list goes on.
If, like me, you find daytime volunteer opportunities a challenge, consider evening options. This is one reason I joined the Board, with a little one still at home and unable to volunteer during the day. You might also consider joining one of our Board subcommittees, such as the Parent-Education Committee or the Financial-Advisory Committee.
Thank you, parents—because of us, Liberty students are exceptional!"
