The Colorado Department of Education has released the 2024 statewide SAT results revealing the senior class at Liberty Common High School, a charter-public high school in the Poudre School District, earned the state’s highest total composite-average score with an impressive 1278.
The state’s second-highest score, 1273, was achieved by the seniors at Stargate School in the Adams 12 School District.
The SAT, a critical measure of college readiness, is administered to all eleventh-grade students across more than 540 public high schools in Colorado.
Liberty Common School Headmaster Bob Schaffer remarked, “These results extend all the way back to Liberty’s kindergarten classrooms where many in the Class of 2025 got their start. Yes, our school is remarkable in many ways, but each individual student earned this score. Seniors did the heavy lifting. They maintain a vibrant school culture where they approach education as a team effort, and today it really shows.”
According to Liberty Common High School Principal, Robert Robinson, the number-one SAT score reflects the character of Liberty’s Class of 2025. “These scores are a testament first and foremost to the hard work and dedication of this talented class of students. It is also evidence of the benefit of a rigorous, classically-oriented curriculum delivered by genuine content experts.”
Assistant Principal Kathleen Kearney noted, “Liberty students are constantly challenged to go beyond academic expectations, and they consistently rise to the occasion. The dedication and perseverance demonstrated by this senior class, along with the unwavering support from their families, have culminated in this exceptional outcome. It’s a true reflection of what a strong, cohesive learning community can accomplish together.”
The number-one SAT score in Colorado also reflects the commitment of Liberty Common’s elementary school in delivering a solid academic foundation via the Core Knowledge Sequence© curriculum. LCS elementary principal Sandy Stoltzfus explained, “Liberty’s young scholars begin their educational journey by building foundational academic skills. In addition to the rich Core Knowledge© curriculum, students are instructed in the skills of reading, conceptual mathematics, spelling, grammar, writing, penmanship, and Latin.
Additionally, character education is foundational to the school's mission. The thoughtful and cumulative classically-oriented curriculum leads our students, by their junior year, to be well prepared to thrive in college and solidly positioned to live the good life,” Stoltzfus added.
Patrick Albright, President of Liberty Common School’s parent-led Board of Directors, attributes this remarkable SAT score to the strength of the curriculum, the tireless work ethic of students and faculty, and the invaluable support of Liberty parents. “This wonderful achievement by Liberty students further demonstrates choice in education works. As a parent-led school, we have the freedom to adhere to philosophies bringing about this success – a curriculum of rich knowledge delivered classically by teachers who are professional content experts. I am extremely proud of the hard work of the students, staff, and families who contributed to this achievement.”
Liberty Common High School is a tuition-free, public institution offering a college-preparatory, classical, liberal-arts curriculum accentuating the humanities with a strong emphasis upon math, science, and engineering. Liberty’s Latin and economics programs begin in kindergarten and extend through high school.
“It is noteworthy Liberty does not teach to this test,” said Headmaster Schaffer. “Our school’s curriculum is not oriented toward showing well on this or any other test despite consistently shining on them all. In the entire history of LCHS, our students have never ranked lower than 4th in Colorado. College-prep success here is no fluke – it’s incandescent. University and career recruiters know this – nationally,” he claimed.
