In Doing What We Ought

In Doing What We Ought
Dr. Pete Conrad

Abraham Lincoln famously framed liberty as a collective duty when he said, “It is your business to rise up and preserve the Union and liberty, for yourselves.” Slightly less famous but equally important is Liberty Common School’s core belief, “it is the right and responsibility of parents to direct the education and upbringing of their children.”

One of the beautiful expressions of Lincoln’s little “l” liberty is in Colorado’s wonderful school choice and charter-school laws, from which came our big “L”– Liberty Common School. Our community has recognized the value of instilling a rich and full education in our children. We now stand at four academic campuses (two elementary, a junior-high, and a high school). Because of this growth and ardent pursuit of truth, beauty, goodness, and perfection, LCS needs parent involvement.

This is not a call to continue to expand and grow. Instead, it is a call to serve as many students in Northern Colorado as possible, to attract and retain the very best teachers in the country, to continue to cultivate an enriching environment for our children, and to preserve that which we believe is worth fighting to keep. You may be asking yourself, “How can I help?!” I’m glad you asked.

Our ongoing expansion has afforded enrollment space in several grades. There has rightly been concern across the state regarding declining enrollment, and while it is true Liberty is not immune from this trend, a larger cause for enrollment opportunities is due to the additional capacity we’ve added. Please encourage friends, family, and colleagues looking for a school with content-focused, rigorous education, promoting it as the “great equalizer” to inquire and apply. The biggest selling point is a positive recommendation from our parents. A good conversation highlighting what your children are learning is worth so much to our school.

Second, LCS needs parents to volunteer and to be involved in the defense of our school. The state enrollment declines have rightly concerned many officials, and unfortunately, there are local threats against charter schools. If you are motivated to support LCS in this manner, please click and email HERE. Liberty Common exists to help us, the parents, in our fundamental duty to our children. Our school is worth defending.

Finally, I encourage all parents to find time to volunteer in their children’s classroom or during special events. These unique opportunities pass by too quickly – I know, my youngest is a senior this year. What may appear like a task difficult to find time for becomes one of the fondest memories you will have as a parent. And you will find yourself as an active participant in that slightly less famous Liberty Common School quote.
