Community of Commitment
Community of Commitment
Pete Conrad, Board of Directors
Liberty Common School is a charter school offering a classically-oriented education to students k-12. This statement may not sound like we are a public school, but we are just that. Liberty Common cuts across the grain, actively promoting parental rights and responsibilities for their child’s education. Not only does our parental community remain steadfastly involved in children’s education, Liberty Common parents are incredibly generous with their time, talent, and treasure.
Student success is dependent upon the direct involvement of parents and the school recently celebrated its most generous financial supporters at the Libertas Society Appreciation Reception at the MillTop at Ginger and Baker. The joyful evening was coupled with delicious and beautifully presented hors-d’oeuvres, refreshing drinks, and a relaxing atmosphere. Comments after the evening were positive and served to reinforce a strong and supportive community. It was also important to recognize the efforts of parents who continue to make Liberty Common the best school available.
How did this amazing event come about? It’s probably best to start at the top. The Liberty Common School Vision Statement reads:
Liberty Common School will be a premier community of primary and secondary schools characterized by high academic achievement and a growing body of students who know the good, the true, the beautiful, and the perfect according to the tradition of classical liberal education.
While we don’t necessarily use benchmarks to score our progress, a quick review of accolades and achievements will affirm our school is remaining true to its vision.
-

-

-
Assistant Principal Chris Reynolds was recently awarded the Milken Educator Award, a prestigious national award recognizing teachers, principals, and specialists who are furthering excellence in education
-
Liberty Common Schools will be expanding with a new junior-high campus beginning in the 2025-2026 school year
These achievements could not have happened without our amazing parents’ support. This tradition is not fleeting or superficial, either. Do you know many of the Founding Parents, including Headmaster Schaffer and Dr. Maureen Schaffer, are still actively engaged with the school even though their children have graduated? Their love for our school is so strong, they continue to ensure Liberty Common remains true to the original mission and vision.
The Board of Directors requirements include a stipulation that sitting members must have a student enrolled at Liberty. Countless volunteer emails and sign-ups are answered, clearly demonstrating the community is fully engaged with the callings of our mission. And, of course, if one would like to join the Libertas Society, please reach out to Brett Harkey.
The third mode of generosity mentioned—charitable giving—is appreciated as it is an essential aspect of supporting our excellent school. With the donations received, LCS has been able to upgrade facilities, such as the new playground at the Plato Campus, purchase the Aristotle campus, andfully commit to adding our new junior high.
While at the Appreciation Reception, I had the pleasure of meeting many amazing people, who had at least one thing in common – a deep love and commitment towards ensuring their child’s education is second to none. The intent of the evening was as simple as it was elegant: It held true to the title of the event – expressing gratitude. Libertas Society members are some of the larger financial supporters of Liberty Common and to show appreciation for their heartfelt giving, an evening of warmth and enjoyment was created to show how valuable our parents are for their dedication to our school.
It was clear as the guests mingled throughout the evening, there is a real sense of community among the parents. While many people were catching up with old friends, I also had the opportunity to meet new friends, namely for me, parents of elementary students. Our children are in high school, and it was gratifying to meet parents who are in the early stages of their children’s educational journey.
