Practiced, Prepared, Loved

Practiced, Prepared, Loved
Bob Schaffer, Headmaster

Liberty Common School students enjoy a cadre of professional classroom faculty, support staff, administrators, and parents who love them.  Chunks of time were devoted, during the early days of the school year, to prepare students for the worst by surrounding them with love.

The school has successfully evaded serious disaster over its 29-year history; yet, we know risk is real enough to be prepared.  Unlikely events are only that, meaning there’s always a small chance for weather disaster, a gas leak, flood, fire, intruder, earthquake, etc.

Having observed firsthand the school’s recent emergency-training exercises, I’m impressed how our students take these practice drills seriously.  They are brought to know how disasters, should they occur, are best survived through cooperation, preparation, and mutual aid

As in life, they owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another.  Indeed, contemplating disasters compels love in abundance – child for child, adults for children, a school community for students.

Thinking through possible safety and security scenarios, practicing outwitting them, and being prepared in all ways is a decades-old LCS tradition.  Despite loud alarms, flashing lights, and periods of classroom interruption, students learn how practice and preparation are confirmation they are loved.
